The Weekend

We stayed at the New Inn, Clapham over a four-day wekend and we can recommend the inn for both their welcome and their food. Both 'A' and 'B' walks had been organised for each day giving walkers opportunities for exploring the local area via longer or shorter walks.

Most people had arrived at the hotel by 1 pm on Friday, in time for a walk in the afternoon. Full day walks had been organised for both the Saturday and Sunday with shorter walks on Monday, recognising that people would be returning home later in the day.

The weather was very kind to us, fine, warm and sunny. It had also been dry for some time so that the peat was firm, which made walking easier, though it did mean that the waterfalls were not at their best.

Friday

On Friday afternoon both ‘A’ and ‘B’ walkers started out from Clapham together to walk in a loop to the west of Ingleborough.

The groups stayed together for the first part of the walk, then the A group went on a little further before looping round to join the route through Austwick to Clapham taken by the B group. This was the only mistake in the planning as both groups passed the public house in Austwick before it opened at five!

Saturday

On Saturday we all started our walks from Malham. The ‘A’ group climbed Gordale Scar, which was an easier scramble than normal as there was very little water coming down the fall.

We then continued to Malham Tarn, where we had lunch, and returned via Malham Cove. We left the ‘B’ group at Gordale Scar, which they viewed but did not climb, and met them again at the top of Malham Cove.

After tea in the café at Malham the ‘A’ group finished off with a short walk along the river Aire to Kirby Malham, returning to Malham over Windy Pike.

Sunday

On Sunday there were alternative walks for the ‘A’ and ‘B’ groups. One group caught a bus so that they could have a linear walk back to Clapham over Ingleborough while the other did a lower level circuit from Clapham.

Starting up the Clapham nature trail. We then headed for the famous Gaping Gill pot hole, before climbing to the summit of Ingleborough where we met the ‘B’ group.

We then descended south-east from Ingleborough for tea in Ingleton before taking a lower level route back to Clapham.

Monday

On Monday the ‘B’ group enjoyed a five mile walk from Settle which allowed them to beat the rush hour traffic on the motorway on their return to Rugby.

The 'A' group climbed Pen-y-ghent via Brackenbottom. We then continued along the ridge to Plover Hill before descending to the valley to return to Horton.
